- Alex Bassan: Young Leader of the Year 2009
StreetChance coach Alex Bassan picked up the Young Leader of the Year Award at the ‘Chance to shine Achievement Awards’ yesterday (22 October).
The Young Leader of the Year Award was sponsored by The British Army and in their citation the judges paid tribute to Alex’s maturity and commitment to his inner-city coaching sessions.
Collecting his award from Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Catermull, Alex, 18, from Sutton (pictured right) said: “I’m over the moon; this means a lot to me. A couple of years ago I left school with nothing, but with the help of Cricket for Change and in particular my mentor Danny Baker, I’ve become a much better person.”
Alex joined the great and the good of the cricketing world who attended the Awards event in Birmingham. Former England captain Mike Gatting, Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board Giles Clarke, ICC President David Morgan and England Women’s captain Charlotte Edwards were among the guests.
StreetChance Operations Manager, Richard Joyce said: “We’re all delighted for Alex who has developed significantly as a coach in the past year. He is a fantastic role model for the young people involved in the StreetChance programme.”
