StreetChance expands from 10 to 15 London boroughs
Youngsters in 15 London boroughs will now enjoy StreetChance sessions both at school and in their local communities.
StreetChance supported by Barclays Spaces for Sports has now launched new projects in Barking & Dagenham, Haringey, Sutton, Waltham Forest and Westminster. The expansion to five new boroughs will add a further 30 state primary and secondary schools to the programme.
In total, 90 schools are now involved in StreetChance and 7,500 boys and girls are expected to take part in the school and community sessions in 2010.
StreetChance Operations Manager, Richard Joyce said, “StreetChance has proved hugely popular with young people in London’s schools and communities. Expanding into a further five boroughs will give even more children in inner-city areas the opportunity to enjoy our exciting version of cricket.”
Commissioner for the Metropolitan Police Service, Sir Paul Stephenson, added: “As one element of our youth strategy across London, the life skills that StreetChance promotes, such as teamwork and leadership, are key to a young person’s all round development. The Met is committed to understanding how it can best hear the concerns of young Londoners. StreetChance has helped to promote this engagement between police and young people.”
Programme partner Cricket for Change will continue to deliver StreetChance sessions, supported by coaches from London Tigers, Capital Kids Cricket, Southwark Community Games and ASG Sports.
StreetChance, launched in 2008, continues to provide cricketing opportunities in Brent, Croydon, Hackney, Hounslow, Kensington & Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark and Tower Hamlets.
Adam Rowse, Regional Director, Barclays said: “We are delighted to be involved in delivering this project, making cricket more accessible to a large number of youngsters from inner city London. This initiative reflects the broader aim of Barclays Spaces for Sports to transform disadvantaged communities through sport.”
